Every vaccine spends its life walking a temperature tightrope.

Vaccines are among the most temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals in existence. The World Health Organization estimates that about half of vaccines worldwide are lost each year because the cold chain fails. In other words, behind every dose that reaches an arm there is a monitoring system quietly doing its job.

The Temperature Red Lines

  • Inactivated vaccines: 2–8 °C

  • Attenuated live vaccines: 2–8 °C, with some requiring storage at −15 °C or colder

  • mRNA vaccines: −70 °C for long-term storage, 2–8 °C for short-term use

Three Critical Monitoring Stages

  • At the plant: full visibility from filling through to warehouse release.

  • In transit: reefer trucks combine GPS and temperature logging, streaming data to a central platform.

  • At the clinic: daily checks of cold-chain refrigerators; any excursion immediately quarantines the stock.

A Real-World Case — A Six-Hour Excursion

During a 2022 provincial CDC delivery, a reefer truck's refrigeration unit failed and the cabin temperature climbed from 5 °C to 14 °C within four hours. The on-board AQAC portable logger triggered SMS alerts and engaged the driver within 30 minutes, who switched on the backup cooling unit. The post-event review showed a total excursion of 1 h 47 min, affecting only 12 cartons nearest the rear of the load. After laboratory confirmation, those doses were released. The near-miss was contained because real-time data and a defined backup procedure were in place.

AQAC equips CDC networks with a three-piece cold-chain kit — an in-cab gateway, portable loggers and a cloud platform — already deployed by several provincial CDCs so that every dose is verifiable.
